How to Score an Opera: Composer Kim D Sherman

• An afternoon with composer Kim Sherman
• See how an opera is orchestrated
• For private groups of 1-4 people

View the creative process up close as you spend a very musical afternoon with composer Kim D. Sherman. Kim has written the music for a full-length opera and is now scoring the piece for a full orchestra. You’ll be on hand to see how she works to translate a musical idea into a symphony.
Join Kim in her home studio as she explains and demonstrates how she orchestrates an original opera, taking her completed piano score and adapting it for a full orchestra. There are many things to consider: how many instruments to use, if the sound should be “big” or “small”, balancing the orchestra with the voices, as well as the practicalities of scoring the work for opera companies around the country.
Ada is an opera about Ada Lovelace Byron, daughter of the famed romantic poet Lord Byron. Ada was a scientist, mathematician, and pioneer in the field of computer programming. Composed by Kim D. Sherman, with a libretto by Margaret Vandenburg, this opera has been in progress for the last four years. Kim is now working to fully orchestrate the piece, which will be submitted to opera companies in the hopes of mounting a full production.
This is a very special opportunity to meet and see a composer in action, in the process of creating an important musical work.
