The Experience

Recording Engineer For a Day

If you’ve always wondered what goes into the making of a record, here’s your chance to find out. You’re invited to spend a day with your host, David Allen Hammond, observing and assisting as he records musicians at Spyderman Studios, located in Chama, New Mexico.

Your day begins with preparing the studio for the day’s session. David will show you the studio layout and explain the process of audio engineering. You’ll learn about the basics of microphone selection and placement, instrument micing, audio paths, and effects. From the comfort of the control room, you’ll get to observe while the engineer and musicians transform their creative vision into a quality music recording.

Then it’s off to lunch with David, where you’ll get to sample the local cuisine from a selection of restaurants in town. After lunch, you’ll head back to the studio for more recording and mixing, as David and the band work to polish the raw recordings, mix, and add effects and additional tracks to the songs. What a great way to learn about music making from the inside!

Over the course of 35 years of performing, David’s songwriting, singing and guitar virtuosity has been featured on stage with Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Kimmie Rhodes, Kelly Willis, Nancy Griffith, Rosie Flores, Jimmie LaFave and many others. As an engineer and producer he has recorded artists of many musical genre's in Austin, Texas and in New Mexico at Spyderman Studios. His songwriting credits include collaborations with Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who received three grammy nominations), Kevin Welch, Fred Koller, Don McCalister, Tom Littlefield, and many others.
